ABC’s Scandal returns March 21st but until then, let’s recap season 2 so far. Olivia Pope, her “gladiators” and everyone in Fitz’s world are finally being shown for who they really are, and let’s just say there are more not-so pleasant than pleasant surprises.

March 21st could not be further away but we hope you’re hanging in there! This week we’ve brought you our first Series Soundsession and a Character Spotlight on a less-public gladiator, but now we’re taking the time to go back in time to where this season started and how things are unfolding. We hope you’ve been keeping up, several spoilers to follow.
So far, Fitz and Olivia are standing tall and proud on their “it’s over” declaration after their White House server closet romp. Even though that was a major deviation from their pledge, how it ended—with Fitz boldly telling Olivia that he can’t control his erections around her—put them right back on track. It also showed Fitz’s dark side, one us viewers can’t really root for anymore.
Finding out your presidency is a sham and that neither your wife nor your mistress believed you could get there without cheating, has to be hard on the old ticker. But all that Scotch must be harder on the liver! Scandal’s POTUS seems to have taken quite a liking for alcohol and I expect the rest of this season will showcase a more publicly reckless drunk Fitz. Now that he knows there could be “a guy” winning Olivia over, he might ditch his fancy crystal and take the bottle straight to the head from now on. Mellie should be careful, after her botched phone call to the families of the hostages, Fitz could put her right back in her cold, dark, lonely corner while he tries to figure out who could really get Olivia to forget about him.
In the power-struggle realm of the how, Mellie and Cyrus are playing tug-of-war with Fitz for influence in the Oval Office. After Mellie convinced Fitz that Cyrus orchestrated the election rigging and forced her and everyone else to go along with it, Fitz completely locks Cyrus out of his decision-making. But two can play that game. Realizing that Mellie likes that Fitz doesn’t trust Cyrus anymore, Cyrus lets Mellie make a bad decision and then leaks to the press that she’ll be talking to the families of the hostages. When Fitz finds out, Cyrus is there to smooth things over and Mellie is completely dismissed. Looks like Cyrus isn’t afraid to be on Mellie’s bad side, but let’s see how long Fitz keeps him on his team.
Back at Olivia Pope & Associates, poor Huck is suffering terribly from his water-boarding experience. It’s refreshing to see Quinn being so frank with him, and it’s even better when he doesn’t shut her out. No one else in the office (besides Olivia’s subliminal inquiries) seems comfortable broaching the subject of any of Huck’s issues, but Quinn is always open with him and unafraid of his reaction. Their characters’ relationship should be explored more going forward–and no, I don’t necessarily mean romantically.
In Abby-land, David Rosen is back in the picture, but she is completely in control and keeping it strictly physical, at least for now. Even though her hard exterior isn’t letting him in, it’s pretty obvious her heart is melting every moment she’s with him. But let’s be honest, no one’s really interested in their relationship. We’re more concerned with the Olivia-Fitz-Jake Ballard triangle developing.
What do we really think of the hired semi-stalker heartthrob intelligence officer anyway? It seems as though he genuinely cares about Olivia, but lying to Fitz and her seems like a recipe for complete failure. I can’t imagine this ending any other way but badly for him, and if Fitz finds out, he could find himself facing his own personal torture–at the hands of the president him self.
We’re anxious to see how this plays out, but what are your theories on where things are going?
